SUGGESTED LEAD: Governor Jay Inslee has signed a bill authored by an East Wenatchee lawmaker, that would require online postings of public agencies’ meetings. John Sattgast reports from Olympia.   (Voice cut: Hawkins-OnlineAgendas-SattgastVoicer-032714.mp3 – Run time :62 seconds. )

MP3 File   Sattgast: It was a quick stroke of the pen in the governor’s office Thursday that set this law into motion. Under the new requirements, public agencies with websites that employ more than 10-full time workers will have to post their meeting agendas online at least 24 hours in advance of each regular meeting.   State Representative Brad Hawkins introduced the measure. He says it will modernize the state’s 43-year-old Open Public Meetings Act, which hasn’t been updated to reflect today’s online technology.

Hawkins:  “The Open Public Meetings Act was first enacted in 1971. It requires public agencies under the statute to issue notice of their meetings, which is to state the date, time and location, but doesn’t say anything about posting meeting agendas. So this bill would require those agencies to post their meeting agendas at least 24 hours in advance of the meetings.”

Sattgast: 12th District Republican State Representative Brad Hawkins, who says the new law will increase transparency in government by providing a convenient way for citizens to see the issues online that public agencies plan to discuss. The bill takes effect June 11th.
