Wenatchee teen serves as page in the House of Representatives

Jack Yount, an 8th-grade student from Pioneer Middle School, recently served as a page in the House of Representatives in Olympia. He was sponsored his by 12th District Rep. Brad Hawkins, R-East Wenatchee.

“The page program is an excellent way for students from around Washington to experience the inner workings of the Legislature for themselves,” Hawkins said. “Jack personally contacted my office last summer about coming to page this year. I’m glad he was able to come over for the week to learn how our state government operates. He is an outgoing and bright young man with a great future.”

Jack attended page school every day during his time in Olympia to better understand the operations and actions of the Legislature. He and Representative Hawkins discussed the legislative process in the House chambers, met with a group of constituents who visited and attended a committee hearing together. Jack also had the opportunity to present a mock bill to fellow students at the end of the week.

As part of his page duties, Jack learned to navigate the many buildings on campus and delivered messages and documents to legislators and staff.

Each year, students from around the state apply to participate in the legislative page program. Students spend a week attending page school, learning the inner workings of state government and assisting legislators on the House floor.

To become a page, applicants must have a legislative sponsor, be between the ages of 14 and 16, and obtain written permission from their parents and school. For more information about the legislative page program, visit: https://www.leg.wa.gov/House/Pages/HousePageProgram.aspx.
