Olympia… Isaac Zavala, a 10th grader from Cashmere High School, spent a week working as a page for the Washington State Senate at the Capitol in Olympia. Zavala was one of 13 students who served as a Senate page for the fourth week of the 2024 Legislative session.

Zavala was sponsored by 12th Legislative District Senator Brad Hawkins, who represents Chelan and Douglas Counties and parts of Snohomish and King Counties on the west side of the state.

“I’m excited to have Isaac at the Capitol this week as a Senate Page. His brother Anthony was a Page last session and enjoyed himself. Like his older brother, Isaac is an outstanding student and mature beyond his years. I’m sure he’ll continue succeeding in school and life,” Hawkins said.

The Senate Page Program allows Washington students to spend a week working in the Legislature. Students are responsible for transporting documents between offices and delivering messages and mail. Pages spend time in the Senate chamber and attend page school to learn about parliamentary and legislative procedures. Students also draft their own bills and engage in a mock session.

“Isaac did an outstanding job serving as a Senate Page and he came at a great week. The Senate was involved in multiple days of ‘floor voting,’ so hopefully he enjoyed observing the debates we had in the chambers,” said Hawkins.

Scott Simmons, Zavala’s teacher at Cashmere High School, said: “His maturity shows in his academic effort and GPA. He is a responsible student who handles multiple extra-curricular activities without interfering with his schoolwork. His attitude is excellent, and all his teachers appreciate his mindset. Isaac will make an excellent Senate Page and greatly benefit from the experience.”

Cashmere High School principal Craig MacKenzie also shared the following about Isaac: “Issac is an outstanding representative of Cashmere High School, and I am sure he will benefit from and add value to the page experience.”

The Washington State Legislature boasts one of the nation’s premier page programs, offering hundreds of students from across Washington State a unique opportunity to actively engage in the legislative process and witness the Legislature and other branches of state government in action.

Pages are sponsored by legislators and undergo a week-long service during the legislative session, occurring January-April in odd-numbered years and January-March in even-numbered years.
