Sattgast: Children in the House gallery. Children in the marble hallways, under the rotunda, and sitting at lawmakers’ desks on the House floor. Monday was “Children’s Day” at the state Capitol and lawmakers paused to honor them with House Resolution 4621. Children’s Day is a tradition held each year in the House of Representatives, and freshman lawmaker Representative Brad Hawkins, standing with his young boys, Tyler and Luke, used the opportunity to give his first speech on the House floor.

Hawkins: “The children that are here among us and the children all throughout our great state. . . they represent our hope and our future. They’re the ones who are going to be creating jobs for our future, growing the economy, helping to deliver the goods and the services that we need later in life. And these children here in our state, they’re going to be the ones who discover cures to heal the sick that will benefit many generations ahead of us.”
Sattgast: Republican Representative Brad Hawkins of East Wenatchee. The children themselves got to vote and they approved the resolution unanimously.
