Wenatchee homeschooler serves as page in the House of Representatives
Preston Burnett, a homeschooled student from Wenatchee and son of Chelan County Sheriff Brian Burnett, served as a page in the state House of Representatives in Olympia during the week of Feb. 24 – 28. He was sponsored by 12th District Rep. Brad Hawkins, R-East Wenatchee.
“It was my pleasure to sponsor Preston. His father is a well-respected public servant in his community and I know Preston understands the importance of getting involved,” Hawkins said. “The page program is an excellent way for students from around our state, both homeschooled and in public schools, to gain firsthand experience as to how our state government operates. I know Preston had a good experience and took a great deal of knowledge home with him.”
Preston attended page school every day during his time in Olympia to better understand the operations and actions of the Legislature. At the end of the week, he wrote and promoted a mock bill to address the issue of harmful food additives.
As part of his page duties, Preston navigated the many buildings on the Capitol campus and delivered messages and documents to legislators and staff. He also had the opportunity to present his mock bill to fellow students.
When he is at home, Preston enjoys golfing, snowboarding, hiking and spending time with his friends and family.
Each year, students from around the state apply to participate in the legislative page program. Students spend a week attending page school, learning the inner workings of state government and assisting legislators on the House floor. Pages earn $35 per day while serving in the program.
